How To Recycle Empty Makeup products
If you’re anything like me you go through makeup and beauty products like there is no tomorrow. But are you responsibly and thoughtfully disposing of the empty packaging?
Thankfully businesses are now partnering with TerraCycle, an innovative recycling company that is a leader in recycling hard-to-recycle materials, so we can easily recycle our makeup empties and they don’t end up in landfill.
Below are a few companies who have taken on this initiative and are committed to making the planet a cleaner and greener place!
Mecca
Next time you reach the end of your favourite beauty product, head into your local MECCA store, pop your empties into the labelled bin and they will take care of the rest.
It’s important to remember that products must be empty or almost empty as TerraCycle won’t accept returns that still have product in them.
Everything collected is sent to TerraCycle to be sorted and processed into raw materials that can be reused instead of being sent to landfill. Here is how different types of materials are recycled:
PLASTICS are separated by number, melted down, and turned into pellets that can be molded and extruded to produce new products.
METALS are separated by type and smelted into ingots for reuse.
GLASS is cleaned and sorted by colour for processing; it is then crushed and melted to be used in new glass products.
Check out the Mecca website for a list of products that can and can’t be recycled in the TerraCycle bin.
FLORA & FAUNA
While some product packaging can be composted or recycled, a lot of beauty packaging isn't easily recyclable so Flora & Fauna have launched a recycling program to solve that problem.
Simply return your empty plastic beauty packaging to Flora & Fauna (either by mail or drop off to their store) and they do all the hard work: collating and separating the products and paying TerraCycle to recycle it.
The best part is that in exchange for returning your beauty packaging Flora & Fauna will credit your account with $10 for being planet-friendly and helping our environment - winning!
Check out the Flora and Fauna website for all the details on their recycling program and products they accept.
PRICELINE
As part of their ‘Greener Together' recycling program, Priceline is taking your makeup empties from any brand and recycling it into something new.
Priceline is cutting down landfill and protecting Mother Earth by taking your makeup empties including bottles, caps, pumps, droppers, plastic tubes, bottles, containers, palettes and other components and sending them to TerraCycle to make new recycled products.
As a bonus, if you’re a Sister Club member you will receive 50 Bonus Sister Club points every month when you recycle your makeup empties.
Check out the Priceline website for a list of stores where you can recycle your makeup empties and the products they do and don’t accept in their recycling program.
So before you throw your next makeup and beauty products in the bin, check what parts can be recycled and return them to one of these stores so they can be reused to make new recyclable products.
